Shiffrin Keeps Slalom Lead

MARIBOR, Slovenia (Jan. 27) - Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO) finished eighth in the Maribor slalom to retain her lead in the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup slalom points going into Tuesday's City Event in Moscow. Race winner Tina Maze did not dissapoint her home town crowd and produced a brilliant wire-to-wire victory for her seventh win of the season. Maze now leads the overall World Cup standings with a massive 1,654 points, more than double runner-up Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany. Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) is third, Shiffrin seventh and Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) eighth.

• Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO) held on to the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup slalom lead with eighth in Maribor.
• Hometown hero Tina Maze captured the wire-to-wire win for her seventh victory of the season.
• Maze now leads the overall standings by a massive 1,654-806 points over German Maria Hoefl-Riesch.
• Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) did not make the final and is third in the overall standings.
• Resi Stiegler (Jackson Hole, WY) was 25th. Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) also did not qualify for the final.
• Shiffrin will make a stop in Moscow for a City Event Tuesday before the World Championships open on Feb. 4
• The U.S. Ski Team will name its World Championships Team on Monday, Jan. 28.
• Universal Sports Network will air the Maribor slalom at 9 a.m. ET

In the first run, Mikaela was fastest in the first split and second fastest at the last split, but she had three really big mistakes in the middle. The snow was pretty tricky, there were a couple of gates where it was slick and then the rest was grippy. I think it was a lot more grippy that what she expected. In the second run, she just wasn't pushing as hard as she normally does, but it was still a good result.

Lindsey and Julia used this as a training run for the World Championships super combined. They were here for the giant slalom, so we took advantage of the opportunity. There's a lot of really great things happening with the women's team as a whole and it will be exciting to see what they can do in Schladming.
