SALT LAKE CITY – Westminster College congratulates its 18 U.S. Ski & Snowboard student-athletes who will compete for Team USA in South Korea next month. All of campus will be watching and cheering them on as they pursue their athletic dreams.

Westminster is proud to be an Official Education Partner of U.S. Ski & Snowboard, the national governing body for competitive skiing and snowboarding. U.S. Ski & Snowboard nominated 18 Westminster students for the 2018 team last week. The athletes will represent the United States next month in events like giant slalom, moguls skiing, snowboardcross and Nordic combined. Athletes train at the Center of Excellence in Park City, Utah, while studying 30 minutes away at Westminster College in Salt Lake City.

Together, Westminster and U.S. Ski & Snowboard help national athletes achieve excellence in the classroom and on the slopes. More than 140 U.S. Ski & Snowboard athletes have attended Westminster College since the partnership began in 2005. The average GPA for all Westminster U.S. Ski & Snowboard students is 3.6. While they all compete in snow sports, they’re individually earning degrees in and exploring varied passions like art, entrepreneurship, physics and biology. They balance intense training schedules and rigorous coursework with inspiring determination.

QUOTES
Megan McJames, three-time Olympian, amateur baker, Westminster junior and finance major
“I think the type of person that I am — and most athletes are — is a little type-A. We like to do our best at everything. When you’re pursuing your best in sports, those skills translate into school and vice versa.

As an athlete, school has been a great outlet for me to take a break from thinking about skiing all the time and realize there is other stuff out there. It has given me skills that translate into making me who I am.”

Abby Rinquist, ski jumper and Westminster art major
“I’m super grateful to get one-on-one time with professors who appreciate what I do. They’re all supportive of the dreams that I have as a student, and the dreams that I have as a person and an athlete.”

Faye Guilini, three-time Olympian, Grand Prix champ, Westminster junior and accounting major
“I was the kid who was in summer school a lot. It took me an extra year to graduate high school and I didn’t really see secondary education as an option. Then I made the national team and thought ‘if I can be the best at my sport, I can get through college.’ I started at Westminster and saw that these professors are willing to be there when you’re in South America or halfway around the world. That’s very beneficial. I have a 3.9 GPA, something I never thought I would have.”

U.S. Ski & Snowboard Designates Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows as Official Training Site

By U.S. Ski & Snowboard
December, 21 2017

OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. (Dec. 20, 2017) – U.S. Ski & Snowboard today announced a five year agreement with Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, designating the resort as an Official Training Site of the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team. Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows joins Mammoth Mountain in California, Deer Valley in Utah, Copper Mountain in Colorado and Timberline Lodge in Oregon as one of only five official training sites across the country. In addition to being an Official Training Site for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows is a U.S. Ski & Snowboard High Performance Center and U.S. Ski & Snowboard Development Site.

“Since hosting the Olympics in 1960, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows has produced some of our nation’s best skiers and snowboarders,” said Luke Bodensteiner, U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s Chief of Sport. “As a World Cup venue, a NASTAR resort and home of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows Ski Teams, both U.S. Ski & Snowboard gold certified clubs, it has demonstrated its commitment to supporting the development of athletes and providing the resources they need to succeed at the elite level. Squaw Valley’s designation as a U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team training site not only provides elite-level training resources for our national team, but also creates  resources in high performance and education that athletes, coaches and clubs in the region can all benefit from.”

As an Official Training Site for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows will host U.S. team athletes for elite training sessions at the resort at key times during the season. Additionally, the High Performance Center and Development Center designations connect Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows Team staff with the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Park City-based Center of Excellence and other high performance centers across the country to share best practices in strength and conditioning, sport science and sports medicine while also acting as a central training and education site for U.S. Ski & Snowboard clubs in the region.

“Being the only U.S. club to be designated as a U.S. Ski & Snowboard Gold Certified Club, Development Site, High Performance Center and Official Training Site is a true honor,” said Todd Kelly, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows Ski Team Program Director. “Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows have a number of phenomenal on-hill training venues for all U.S. Ski & Snowboard athletes and we look forward to welcoming them to our resort, and supporting their needs while they’re here. This designation also gives our great youth coaches access to additional resources available through U.S. Ski & Snowboard, allowing them to continue in their own development as coaches. Finally, there’s nothing better for our young athletes than the opportunity to watch, train alongside and get inspiration from some of our country’s best winter sports athletes.”

Host of the 1960 Winter Olympics, 1969 and 2017 FIS World Cup’s and, this year, the NASTAR National Championships, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows and the surrounding communities of Truckee and North Lake Tahoe have a strong connection to the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team. With athlete representation at every winter games since 1964, many current and former U.S. Ski Team athletes credit the resort’s diverse and challenging terrain for much of their success. The resort currently has six athletes on the U.S. Alpine Ski Team, more than any other resort or race program in the country. Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows is eager to continue the legacy with the designation of Official Training Site of the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Teams.

Future Look at Ski Racing Development

By Tom Kelly

Future Look at Ski Racing Development

PARK CITY, Utah (Nov. 16, 2017) - Alpine ski racing has a long history of success in America. But how is it positioned for the future? U.S. Ski & Snowboard, the governing body for Olympic skiing and snowboarding in America, is initiating evolutionary changes in how it will approach alpine ski racing with an eye on results at the 2022 and 2026 Olympics. The recommendations come after a nearly two-year analysis resulting in a program direction that will bring changes to team selection and development philosophy.

Beginning in the spring of 2016, U.S. Ski & Snowboard undertook a comprehensive, in-depth analysis to better understand and learn both from its own alpine development system and those of other major nations in the sport. The Project 26 study represented an evolutionary change in how U.S. Ski & Snowboard, along with its regional and club network, will approach national team selection and development programming in the future - specifically with an eye on results at the 2026 Olympics and beyond.

The result of these studies will be a new foundation of criteria for naming annual A-B-C Teams, as well as an innovative new methodology for inviting and managing athletes into the alpine development program. Key changes that will include:

  • Refine U.S. Ski Team programming to focus on winning medals with selection criteria specifically focused on athletes who are on track to win medals.
  • Shift from a national-managed D team to a shared elite development model between U.S. Ski & Snowboard and clubs.
  • U.S. Ski & Snowboard will work more closely with regions and clubs to create a deeper pool of elite developing athletes from 12 to 20 years old.
  • Direct resources towards high-level coaching expertise as well as club and coach education.

"Our success as a nation in alpine ski racing is predicated on our club and regional programs to work in concert with U.S. Ski & Snowboard with an eye on our Best in the World vision," said U.S. Ski & Snowboard President and CEO Tiger Shaw. "The development phase of Project 26 took a deep look into what has worked for both the USA and top foreign nations in our sport. Its implementation will help us to be competitive as we head into the next two Olympic cycles  and beyond."

U.S. Ski & Snowboard will begin implementation of Project 26 immediately. With the onset of the 2017-18 competition season this month, selection criteria for the 2018-19 U.S. Ski Team have now been announced and are reflective of the recommended direction.

The Project 26 working group was comprised of leaders from U.S. Ski & Snowboard's board and the alpine racing community. Their work in surveying domestic and international program leaders was reviewed extensively by our alpine staff to come to a final direction.

The deal provides Comcast with global sponsorship rights in the cable television and telecommunications category, use of U.S Ski & Snowboard’s logo and athletes, and a strong brand signage presence at Toyota U.S. Grand Prix events, which serve as the Olympic qualifying series for freestyle skiing and snowboard.

"This global partnership with Comcast reflects the stature of our athletes and events and the impact they have in both the U.S. and international sports market," said U.S. Ski & Snowboard Chief Commercial Officer Dan Barnett.
