Hydro Flask U.S. Snowboard Team rider and Olympian Sean FitzSimons competed in the first World Cup of the season, a big air event in Chur, Switzerland. The event featured the world’s best snowboarders, showcasing their air awareness on Switzerland’s largest freestyle ramp.

In qualifications, FitzSimons landed a frontside triple cork 1440, securing a spot in the finals. During the nighttime finals, FitzSimons went big with three runs: front triple 1440 weddle, back 1620 weddle and back triple 1440 weddle, respectively.

FitzSimons finished fifth overall, trailing behind a full Japan podium sweep, with Hiroto Ogiwara in first, Kira Kimura in second and Takeru Otsuka in third.

FitzSimons has an impressive track record, having competed in both slopestyle and big air in the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, as well as taking home first at the Laax 2022 World Cup in slopestyle.

Hydro Flask U.S. Snowboard Team athletes Jake Canter, Brooklyn DePriest and Fynn Bullock-Womble, who landed a new trick, cab 1440, also competed in qualifications, but did not qualify for finals. Next up, the Hydro Flask U.S. Snowboard Team will travel to Beijing, China for the next contest of the 2023-24 season.

Podmilsak Fourth in First Freeski World Cup of Season

Troy Podmilsak Executing Triple 18 Mute at Big Air Chur World Cup (Buchholz/FIS Freeski).

Stifel U.S. Freeski Team athlete and 2023 world champion Troy Podmilsak made an impression at the first World Cup of the season. The Big Air Chur World Cup event in Switzerland kicked off qualifiers a day earlier than scheduled due to heavy winds and rain in the forecast, and Podmilsak capitalized on the opportunity and went out big. Executing a triple 18 mute placed him in second in his heat and guaranteed a spot in the finals. Unfortunately, the extreme weather conditions led to the cancellation of finals, with the results from Thursday, Oct. 19, qualifications standing as the final results.

Podmilsak finished in fourth place overall, trailing behind Dylan Deschamps of Canada in first, Daniel Basher of Austria in second and Birk Ruud of Norway in third.

"I'm happy to have shown up and landed the trick I wanted to do yesterday. I was looking forward to stepping it up today for finals but you can’t beat the weather," said Stifel U.S. Freeski Team athlete Troy Podmilsak. "Big thanks to the organizers for making the jump awesome in the difficult conditions. Looking forward to coming back next season!"

Podmilsak, often referred to as TPod, is no stranger to pushing the boundaries in freeskiing. Despite being only 19 years old, he clinched a gold at his first World Championships in big air and took home third place at this event last season.

Notably, Podmilsak was the only U.S. skier to compete in the Big Air Chur event. Next up, the Stifel U.S. Freeski Team will travel to Stubai, Austria for the next contest of the 2023-24 season.

PARK CITY, Utah (Oct. 12, 2023) - U.S. Ski & Snowboard announced the schedule for the upcoming 2023-24 Stifel Success NorAm Series, part of the NorAm Cup. The schedule will contain 18 starts across slalom, giant slalom, super-G and downhill for alpine.

The NorAm Cup series is one of five Continental Cups (Europe, Australia-New Zealand, South America, Far East). The NorAm Cup is a FIS series of events hosted in the U.S. and Canada, and is considered a stepping stone to the World Cup circuit.

The calendar will return to Copper Mountain, Beaver Creek Resort, Burke Mountain and Stratton Mountain, which offer consistent and challenging terrain for up-and-coming alpine ski racers. The schedule is also returning to the esteemed Whiteface Mountain in New York after a one-year hiatus.

Stifel, the title sponsor of the Stifel U.S. Alpine Ski Team, is the title sponsor of the United States-based alpine Stifel Success NorAm Series. The schedule will also feature a number of starts in Canada with NorAm Finals finishing off in Panorama, British Columbia April 1-11.

“The NorAm Cup is a vital next step for our athletes on the way to Europa Cup and World Cup competition,” said U.S. Ski & Snowboard Alpine Development Director Chip Knight. “It is also a significant benchmarking series for our junior athletes, with NorAm results helping athletes qualify for the World Junior Championships in Haute Savoie, France this year and ultimately earn national team selection.”
