Mancuso Second in SG Standings

By U.S. Ski & Snowboard
March, 14 2013

LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland (March 14) – Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) capped an incredible super G season with a second place finish in the women’s super G standings. She was in contention for the title, but high winds and heavy overnight snow forced officials to cancel the final Audi FIS Alpine World Cup Final super G, handing the title to Slovenia's Tina Maze. Mancuso finished top six, including four podiums in the six contested super G races this season.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) finished second in the women’s super G standings after officials canceled the women’s Audi FIS World Cup Final super G race Thursday due to high winds.
  • As a result, Mancuso ended the season just a mere 55 points behind Slovenian Tina Maze, who locked in the overall title nine races before the end of the season.
  • Also in super G, Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) missed the final two races due to injury, but captured two wins and finished fourth.
  • Leanne Smith (North Conway, NH) was 12th, Laurenne Ross (Bend, OR) 13th and Stacey Cook (Mammoth Lakes, CA) 34th.
  • This was the second day in a row that finals races had to be canceled due to challenging weather.
  • Canceled races at the World Cup Finals cannot be rescheduled.
  • The World Cup Finals continue Saturday with women's slalom, where Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO) is in the hunt for the title.

QUOTES
Julia Mancuso
Super G has been really fun. We’ve had a lot of weather so we’re used to days like today. It’s definitely unfortunate not to get to battle it out to the last race, but I’m really happy with how I’m skiing and looking forward to next year.

In super G I just feel really confident and we have an amazing group of coaches. That helps a lot with inspection and course report, being able to really nail it on the first run. That’s been my strength the last years and I’m just building off of that confidence and every year is getting a little faster, a little better. I just have to take it one step further and win races.

Our team is just full of a lot of special girls. We have a lot of fun on the road together. We kind of have to be each other’s family because we’re away from home so much. Everyone gets along really well and so we’re lucky.

Alex Hoedlmoser, Women’s U.S. Ski Team Head Coach
We had a fantastic season on the super G side. It’s unfortunate that the race had to get canceled, but the conditions on top were just not good enough. There was a lot of wind blowing and the wind was blowing the snow across the track and you couldn’t really see anything. It would have been too dangerous on a very challenging hill like that. So it was actually a right decision to do that. A little unfortunate for us, but that’s how things work.
