Ford Within .04 of Super G Win

WINTER PARK, CO (March 30) - Tommy Ford (Bend, OR/Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation) came within .04 of another gold medal as Canadian Dustin Cook squeaked the Nature Valley U.S. Alpine Championships super G title Friday in Winter Park. Young guns Brennan Rubie (Salt Lake City/Snowbird Sports Education Foundation) and Jared Goldberg (Holladay, UT/Team Flow) tied for third. Ryan Cochran-Siegle (Starksboro, VT/Cochran's/Mt. Mansfield Ski and Snowboard Club) claimed the top junior honor as sun drenched Winter Park for a third straight day to create extremely soft and challenging snow conditions.

• Ford won his seventh U.S. title Thursday with the slalom victory to open men's racing in Winter Park.

• Ryan Cochran-Siegle (Starksboro, VT) took the junior title ahead of Bryce Bennett (Olympic Valley, CA/Squaw Valley Ski Team) and Kieffer Christianson (Anchorage/Burke Mountain Academy).
• Action continues Saturday in Winter Park with the Nature Valley U.S. Alpine Championships women's giant slalom.

I'm pumped to be here, [Tommy Ford] skis really well in these conditions, so it was a surprise to beat him. I haven't won a Canadian title yet but this will be my second U.S. title. I really like Colorado, the rest of the Canadian guys are racing in Panorama but I wanted to do more speed, they're doing more tech so I came out here to score some points and it looks like it worked out so far.

You've got to ski fast to beat me here. Soft snow is good for me.

The snow is a little inconsistent, but it was fast and turny. You just needed to hang with it - it was a fight though. You had to be a really balanced skier and be willing to let it go to be fast.

Jared Goldberg
Podiums are always the goal and it's cool to share it with Brennan [Rubie]. I'm really happy with how I skied on the bottom of the course today. It was not at all easy up top and I was a little behind, but was able to make up some time on the bottom and score a podium.

A podium behind Dustin [Cook] and Tommy [Ford] is really good. Those guys are fast skiers and these are definitely there kind of conditions. I'm also pretty happy about being ahead of Ryan [Cochran-Siegle]. He's had an incredible season and started things out with fast slalom. Hopefully I can keep this momentum going in the giant slalom.

The snow is peely they did a good job at making it smooth which is impressive. It's a nice way to end it for sure. I'm glad that I was able to get some World Cup points, world juniors was awesome. My season’s been really good. Hopefully I can get another good result on Sunday in the giant slalom.
