Career Best GS Finish for Shiffrin

By U.S. Ski & Snowboard
December, 28 2012

SEMMERING, Austria (Dec. 28) - Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO) battled a rugged Audi FIS Alpine World Cup in Semmering to finish a career best eighth in giant slalom and leap into 10th in the overall World Cup standings. Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) finished 25th as wind and fog made the already bumpy course exponentially more challenging. Austrian Anna Fenninger posted the wire-to-wire win with a massive 1.1 second margin over Slovenian overall leader Tina Maze. A slalom is slated for Saturday, a year to the day after Shiffrin's first World Cup podium. Shiffrin claimed her first World Cup win with slalom victory a week ago in Are, Sweden and currently leads the World Cup slalom standings.

QUOTES
Mikaela Shiffrin
That felt better. I had some energy that run. I mean, my energy level has been okay, or maybe I’m just telling myself it’s okay—mind over matter. Last night I actually had the best night of sleep that I’ve had in a long time, so hopefully tonight I get a good night of sleep and come out tomorrow and have some fun.

Julia Mancuso
It was actually pretty good considering how warm it is. There’s one tricky turn up there that’s catching most people. It’s a little bumpy and there’s a dish at the gate, but it wasn’t too bad. There was just a bump and you couldn’t see the holes really, but that’s what happens.

Roland Pfeifer, Technical Head Coach
Lately she has been three times in the top 10, so she is progressing rapidly, I’d say it’s really promising on the way to Schladming.
