Baumgartner Leads USA at SBX Worlds
STONEHAM, QC (Jan. 26) - Veteran Nick Baumgartner (Iron River, MI) led the USA finishing seventh in snowboardcross at the FIS Snowboard World Championships in Stoneham. Baumgartner got tangled up in the semis but came back to win the small final to take seventh. Faye Gulini (Salt Lake City) led the U.S. women in 14th. Alex Pullin of Australia and Canada's Maelle Ricker took men's and women's titles. The Championships conclude Sunday.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Nick Baumgartner (Iron River, MI) led the USA finishing seventh in SBX at the FIS Snowboard World Championships. Faye Gulini (Salt Lake City) led U.S. Snowboarding for the women.
- Baumgartner won his opening heat and was second in quarterfinals. He was challenging for the lead in the semis before getting tangled up and finishing sixth. He came back to win the small final.
- Hagen Kearney (Telluride, CO), in his first World Championships, was the only other American to advance past the opening heats. Kearney squared off in a heat with Seth Wescott (Sugarloaf, ME), taking third to advance to quarter finals while Wescott, who won the USANA World Cup at Telluride, missed advancing in fourth.
- The FIS Snowboard Championships conclude Sunday with parallel slalom. The SBX team heads to Blue Mountain, ON next weekend with the Olympic test event in mid-February in Sochi. The team will be back to the USA in early March for the Sprint U.S. Grand Prix at Canyons Resort in Park City, UT.

Everyone rode really well today and Nick got a bit caught up in some bad luck with a tangle. It would have been great for him to be able to push through, but it wasn't his day today. I can say the same for Faye as well. Hagen is new to the World Cups and learning about riding in the pack, but he is really doing a great job and has a really good true skill set.
