Biesemeyer Injured In Downhill Training
Team USA downhill skier Tommy Biesemeyer (Keene, N.Y.) suffered a season-ending right ankle injury during downhill training on Wednesday. He was taken by team medical staff to a local clinic, where he was treated and released. He will not compete in the men’s downhill. His place in the race will be taken by Ryan Cochran-Siegle (Starksboro, Vt.).
For Biesemeyer, it was a heartbreaking injury on the eve of his first Olympic event.
"I wonder why this happens. It is hard to not think if there is a deeper meaning to it all. You are supposed to be optimistic in times like these and say something like, ‘I will come back stronger than ever.’ But I just can't bring myself to do it. I am honored to have been named to Team USA and walking in the Opening Ceremony is a moment I’ll never forget.”
The men’s downhill is schedule to start Thursday at 11:30 a.m. KT / 9:30 p.m. EST Wednesday. Scheduled to start for Team USA are Bryce Bennett (Squaw Valley, Calif.), Jared Goldberg (Holladay, Utah), Maple Wiley (Aspen, Colo.) and Cochran-Siegle.

Women’s Slalom Postponed To Friday
Due to strong winds at the Alpensia Alpine Centre, the 2018 Olympic Winter Games women’s slalom has been postponed to Friday. The first run starts at 10:00 a.m. KT / 8:00 p.m. EST Thursday, and second run starts at 1:15 p.m. KT / 11:15 p.m. EST Thursday. Men's super-G start will be at 11:00 a.m. KT / 9:00 p.m. EST Thursday.
Despite the postponements, athletes and staff remain optimistic. “It is definitely unfortunate that we weren’t able to race today, but it is important we have a fair race for all of the athletes and today’s conditions would definitely not have been fair," said Mikaela Shiffrin. "Weather delays and postponements are just the nature of an outdoor sport, but we’ll continue to take it day by day and I look forward to getting in the start gate!”
Head Women's Coach Paul Kristofic agreed that, though this is a bummer, it is not entirely abnormal as ski racing is a sport that relies on Mother Nature to cooperate. "We’ve been through days like this before, in World Cup, quite often and the number one thing is safety and the second thing is to have a good, fair race," noted Kristofic. "So neither of those were achievable today. Now we’re going to get ready for giant slalom, so there’s going to be giant slalom training this afternoon. We roll with the punches and make the best of the situation and try to prepare the best we can for the next day.”

The women’s slalom is scheduled for Thursday, with a first run start time of 10:00 a.m. KT / 8:00 p.m. EST Wednesday. The second run is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. KT / 11:45 p.m. EST Wednesday. FREESKIING
Team USA Freeskiing Athletes Arrive At Games
Members of the Team USA halfpipe freeskiing team arrived in at the Games following a training block in Japan that turned into days of powder skiing.
"We actually went over to Japan for a training session, which quickly turned into powder skiing and we can’t really complain about that,” Aaron Blunck (Crested Butte, Colo.) said. “It definitely put our heads in a great place moving into the Games."
Upon their arrival to PyeongChang, the team had a chance to witness Shaun White winning his third Olympic halfpipe snowboarding gold medal. It was clear his performance lit a fire under the freeski athletes.
"Shaun set the bar and now it’s time for us to see if we can match it,” said defending halfpipe freeskiing gold medalist David Wise (Reno, Nev.) “I feel very grateful to have been there and cheer the team on.”
Freeskiing halfpipe competition kicks off Monday with the women’s qualifying. The men’s qualifying is scheduled for Tuesday.

NORDIC COMBINED
Fletcher Leads Team USA in 19th
Bryan Fletcher (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) was the top American in 19th Wednesday in the normal hill/10k event. Taylor Fletcher (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) was 35th, followed by Ben Loomis (Eau Claire, Wis.) in 41st and Jasper Good (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) 45th.
The Gundersen large hill/10k is scheduled for Tuesday, following by the team event on Thursday, Feb. 22.

White Reclaims Halfpipe Gold
Shaun White (Carlsbad, Calif.) collected his third career Olympic gold medal, winning the halfpipe snowboarding at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.
White added PyeongChang gold to his Torino 2006 and Vancouver 2010 gold medal collection. In addition, his victory was the 100th Olympic gold medal won by Team USA in Olympic Winter Games history. Team USA has also swept all four snowboard gold medals awarded this far at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, adding White’s title to both Red Gerard and Jamie Anderson’s slopestyle victories, and Chloe Kim’s halfpipe victory.

Ligety Fifth In Alpine Combined
Ted Ligety (Park City, Utah) finished fifth in the men's alpine combined to lead Team USA at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre Tuesday afternoon at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.
In the first-run downhill, Ligety finished 26th, 2.12 seconds off the lead, which proved to be too large of a margin to overcome to land on the podium, despite skiing the fourth-fastest time in the second-run slalom.
“I was happy with how I did today,” said Ligety, who won the 2006 alpine combined gold medal at the Torino Games. “To battle from a disadvantage against some of the best slalom skiers in the world isn’t really the formula for a medal, but I’m happy with how I skied both runs.” ... Diggins Sixth In Classic Sprint
Jessie Diggins (Afton, Minn.) skied with guts and determination, challenging for a medal in the Olympic classic sprint but falling just short in sixth. Sophie Caldwell (Peru, Vt.) was eighth on a windy night at the Alpensia Cross Country Centre.
The men's gold went to Norwegian Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo - his first Olympic medal, with Sweden's Stina Nilsson taking gold for the women in a hard fought battle with defending Sochi Olympic champion Maiken Caspersen Falla.
Simi Hamilton (Aspen, Colo.) led the U.S. men finishing 20th after a quarterfinal crash that sent him to the back of the pack. Erik Bjornsen (Winthrop, Wash.) was 25th. Sadie Bjornsen (Winthrop, Wash.), who went out in a fast quarterfinal heat, was 12th. It was the first time the USA has ever placed three athletes into the top 12 in an Olympic cross country event.
While a medal eluded Team USA, it was a classic race outcome few could have predicted just a few years earlier. "For me, just making the final has been a huge step forward," said Diggins. "If you had told me a year ago that I would make the Olympic classic finals, I never would have believed you. We had really competitive skis today and we have such a deep and strong women’s team so I’m really stoked. Chloe Gold - Arielle Bronze
Chloe Kim (Torrance, Calif.) made her long-awaited Olympic halfpipe debut and rode away with a gold medal.
On her first run of the three-run final, Kim opened up with a 93.75 to take the lead over China’s Jiayu Lui, who scored an 89.75 on her second run to give her silver. On her third-run victory lap, Kim nailed back-to-back 1080s – the first in Olympic history – to score a 98.25.
Arielle Gold (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) nailed her final run to take the bronze medal with a score of 85.75, bumping three-time Olympic medalist Kelly Clark (Mt. Snow, Vt.) into fourth with a score of 83.50.
With the gold medal in her pocket, Kim still wanted more out of her third and final run. "I knew I wouldn’t be satisfied taking the gold and knowing that I hadn’t put down my best," she said. "That third run was for me - to put down the best run I could do."

Team USA Qualifies All Four For Halfpipe Finals
Shaun White (Carlsbad, Calif.) led four Team USA riders in qualifying to advance to the final round of men's snowboard halfpipe Tuesday at Phoenix Snow Park.
The leader after the first run with a 93.25, White answered a challenge by Australian Scotty James and added more than five points to his second run score.
“Today was all about just getting into finals,” White said. “ I was stoked to put that first run down and it took the pressure right off. Then I saw everyone putting amazing runs down and I figured I would step it up and send it on my last one. I knew I had it in me and all the other riders just fired me up."
Ben Ferguson (Bend, Ore.) finished fourth, while Chase Josey (Hailey, Idaho) and Jake Pates (Eagle, Colo.) were seventh and eighth, respectively.

Ted Ligety (Park City, Utah) finished fifth in the men's alpine combined to lead Team USA at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre Tuesday afternoon at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

Austria's Marcel Hirscher won the gold after posting the fastest slalom run of the day. France swept the remaining two podium spots, with Alexis Pinturault earning the silver medal and Victor Muffat-Jeandet claiming the bronze.

Bryce Bennett (Squaw Valley, Calif.) finished in 15th in the downhill and 17th overall in his first Olympic event.

“The results don’t dictate how I felt,” Bennett said. “I thought I executed well mentally and technically in the downhill, but I was two seconds out and it’s hard to rebound from that.

“It was cool to get my first Olympic race out of the way because it was a little nerve-racking,” Bennett added, “so, for the downhill race I think I can be in a better place mentally.”

Jared Goldberg (Holladay, Utah) was 36th, but most importantly, finished fourth in the downhill portion, setting himself up for Thursday’s downhill race.

“My downhill run today was good, I’m happy with it,” Goldberg said. “There are a couple of things I can clean up, but it was good to get another training run for the downhill race.”

Ryan Cochran-Siegle (Starksboro, Vt.) also raced Tuesday but did not finish the downhill.

Up next, the men compete in downhill on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. KT / 9:30 p.m. EST Wednesday.  The men race Super-G on Friday at 11:00 a.m. KT / 9:00 p.m. EST Thursday.

“I’m feeling good in both super-G and giant slalom, and I feel like I’m skiing well,” Ligety said. “So hopefully I could get another couple good days of training in, and keep the ball rolling.”

Due to strong winds and the weather forecast, the women’s Olympic giant slalom scheduled for Monday has been postponed to Thursday.

“It’s a bummer that we’re not able to race today,” said Mikaela Shiffrin. “But with the training block I’ve had, I’m prepared and feeling good. I’ll use this time to continue to train and refocus on Wednesday’s slalom race. We have a great gym and space to eat and take plenty of naps, so I’ll use this time to recharge.”

The women’s slalom is scheduled for Wednesday, with a first run start time of 10:15 a.m. KT / 8:15 p.m. EST Tuesday. The second run is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. KT / 11:45 p.m. EST Tuesday.

The women’s giant slalom is now scheduled for Thursday with a first run start time of 9:30 a.m. KT / 7:30 p.m. EST Wednesday. The second run is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. KT / 11:15 p.m. EST Wednesday.

Men’s Downhill Postponed
Due to the strong wind, Sunday's men's downhill was rescheduled for Thursday, February 15 at 11:00 a.m. KT/9:00 p.m. EST Wednesday. The men's super-G will now move to Friday, February 16 at 11:00 a.m. KT / 9:00 p.m. EST Thursday. Based on the official forecast, the jury has also canceled Monday’s alpine combined downhill training.

Freeski Athletes ‘Thrilled’ to Kick Off Games
The U.S. slopestyle team participated in their arrival press conference Sunday and it was clear that all the athletes are excited for training and competition to commence.
"It's an honor to be here, I'm excited to represent myself, my friends, my family and my country in two events and be the first athlete to do that,” said Sochi silver medalist Devin Logan (West Dover, Vt.). “I'm thrilled and hopefully I can bring home another Olympic medal."
For some, the PyeongChang Olympics are a chance at redemption, including Maggie Voisin (Whitefish, Mont.), who battled an injury at the Sochi Games.
“On the third day of training I fractured my fibula right above my ankle and I was not able to compete, which was one of the most heartbreaking moments of my career,” Voisin said. “I told myself that day four years ago that I was going to do whatever it took to make it back and to be sitting here with these incredible athletes that make up Team USA, I'm honored and ready to represent our country and show the world what we do." Nick Goepper (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) echoed that sentiment looking to improve his performance from the last Olympic games.
"I won a bronze medal in Sochi, and I would be lying if I said that I am not coming into this competition with a small chip on my shoulder," Goepper said.
Competition begins Friday with slopestyle freeskiing at 10:00 a.m. KT / 8 p.m. EST Thursday, with ladies qualifications. Men's competition will take place on February 18th.

Kauf Leads Team USA in Seventh
Team USA advanced all four athletes to the moguls finals Sunday night after Tess Johnson (Vail, Colo.) won the second qualification run at the Phoenix Snow Park to join her three teammates in this evening's final round.
With heavy snow falling during the second run of the finals, Team USA skied well but came up short with Jaelin Kauf (Alta, Wyo.) just missing out on qualifying for the third final run - finishing seventh. Keaton McCargo (Telluride, Colo.) was eighth, Johnson finished 12th with Morgan Schild (Pittsford, N.Y.) in 15th.
The men will have second qualifying run prior to the finals on Monday night. Troy Murphy (Bethel, Maine) qualified for the finals following his fourth-place finish in the first qualifying round Friday. Patterson 18th In Skiathlon
Scott Patterson (Anchorage, Alaska) led the way for Team USA, finishing 18th as the men opened with a 30k skiathlon in the 2018 Olympic Winter Games Sunday afternoon at the Alpensia Cross Country Skiing Center.
“My first Olympic race was awesome,” said Patterson. “You know, World Cup-Olympic, they are kind of similar, and then you get here and they’re nothing at all the same.”
Patterson was 27th at the midway point of the 30-kilometer race, which featured 15k of classic, followed by 15k of freestyle, when the athletes switched from the classic to the freestyle technique.
“The first couple of laps the pack really spread out and then I relaxed,” Patterson said. “We switched over to skate and really felt like I knew what I was doing. Then just picked off a few people and put together a great race overall.” … READ MORE / RESULTS

Women Ready to Soar
The women's ski jumpers are ready for their Olympic medal event with Monday night's normal hill competition. Red Gerard (Silverthorne, Colo.) stomped the run of his life to win Team USA’s first gold medal of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games Sunday in slopestyle snowboarding.
"When that score came up my jaw dropped," said Gerard, who is the youngest Olympic snowboarding gold medalist ever. "I was like ‘this isn’t real’. I would have been happy to just land a run, but to land a run and win, it’s crazy."
Sitting well out of medal contention after crashing out on his first two of three runs, Gerard absolutely nailed his third run with a score of 87.16 and withstood a stout challenge from Canada's Max Parrot, whose third and final run score of 86.00 was good enough for silver. Parrot's teammate, Mark McMorris, tallied an 85.20 on his second run for his second consecutive Olympic bronze medal. "I’m just insanely excited right now," said Gerard, "I can’t believe it all worked out. I just wanted to land a run. After falling on my second run, I was really excited for the third run."

Due to the strong wind and the forecast for Sunday, the jury together with POCOG has decided to reschedule the men's downhill for Thursday, February 15 at 11:00 a.m. KT/9:00 p.m. EST Wednesday.

The men's super-G will take place on Friday, February 16 at 11:00 a.m. KT/9:00 p.m. EST Thursday. Based on the official forecast, the jury has also canceled Monday’s alpine combined downhill training.

"We kind of expected this downhill to be postponed due to wind, but at the same time, the guys were charged up and ready to go," said U.S. Men's Alpine Head Coach Sasha Rearick, "With this being an outdoor sport, it is not abnormal. The excitement, the energy on the team right now is fantastic. I couldn’t be prouder of the team. Now the key is to take that energy and harness it, stay relaxed, and then be able to ramp back up. This gives us time to focus on slalom training for the combined, which is what we’ll do tomorrow.”

Goldberg Eighth In Final Downhill Training
Jared Goldberg (Holladay, Utah) finished eighth in the third and final downhill training run before Sunday’s race. Bryce Bennett (Squaw Valley, Calif.) was ninth, followed by Thomas Biesemeyer (Keene, N.Y.) 13th; Ryan Cochran-Siegle (Starksboro, Vt.) 20th; and Wiley Maple (Aspen, Colo.) 23rd.

Women’s Moguls Finals Sunday
The U.S. women’s moguls team will compete in the medal round on Sunday. Morgan Schild (Pittsford, N.Y.), Jaelin Kauf (Alta, Wyo.) and Keaton McCargo (Telluride, Colo.) qualified through to finals from the first round of qualifications. Tess Johnson (Vail, Colo.) will compete to earn a spot in finals in the second round of qualifications beginning on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. KT/5:30 a.m. EST. Diggins Just Seconds From A Medal
Jessie Diggins (Afton, Minn.) posted the best U.S. women’s Olympic cross country finish in history, placing fifth in the skiathlon event as the first medals of the Olympic Winter Games were awarded Saturday afternoon at the Alpensia Cross-Country Skiing Center.
“I’m really proud of my race. I could not have pushed harder,” said Diggins. “Being seconds away from a medal and seeing it right there - I know it’s possible, I know I have what it takes. I think I’m in a good place in these games.”
The event combined two 7.5 km legs, the first skied in the classic style with a second leg raced in the freestyle technique. Diggins was 10th at the halfway transition, 5.4 seconds off the pace. She was able to take 3.3 seconds off that lead by the halfway point of the second leg, but a grueling pace set by Sweden's Charlotte Kalla over the last three kilometers left the field fighting for silver.
Calla covered the 15 km in 40:44.9 to claim the first gold medal of the Games, 7.8 seconds ahead of silver medalist Marit Bjoergen of Norway. Finland's Krista Parmakoski won the bronze medal in 40:55.0. Diggins posted a time of 40:59.6.

Men’s Skiathlon Sunday
Starting for Team USA in the 30k men’s skiathlon Sunday are Erik Bjornsen (Winthrop, Wash.), Scott Patterson (Anchorage, Alaska), Noah Hoffman (Aspen, Colo.), and Paddy Caldwell (Lyme Center, N.H.).
“I’m very excited and anxious to get the racing started,” Bjornsen said. “The 30k skiathlon should be a good event for me. I’d love to start things off on a high note!”

Bickner 18th in Men’s HS109 Finals
Kevin Bickner (Wauconda, Ill.) placed 18th on the men's normal hill in ski jumping competition at the Alpensia Ski Jumping Center Saturday evening - the best U.S. Olympic result since Alan Alborn was 11th in the normal hill at 2002 Olympics.
The Norge Ski Club athlete soared to 14th after his first ride with the second longest jump of the round at 109.0 meters.
"Before I came here my goal was to have a top 20 - I've now achieved that," said Bickner. "Given the day I had, I think I can set my expectations higher. I’ll try to take my first jump tonight and transfer it over to the big hill."
His first jump was a huge motivator for Bickner. "Everything just really worked out," he said. "All the little things I was tweaking through the week came together, I got lucky with wind and I was able to throw one down to the bottom."
Germany's Andreas Wellinger took the win. One of the favored nations, Poland, was shut out of the medals as Norway's Johann Andre Forfan took silver and Robert Johansson bronze.
It was a cold, blustery night on the jumps with wind forcing multiple delays and pushing the competition to past midnight.
Ski jumping continues on Monday, Feb. 12, with the women's normal hill competition, scheduled for 8 p.m. KT/6 a.m. EST. Nita Englund (Florence, Wisc.), Sarah Hendrickson (Park City, Utah) and Abby Ringquist (Park City, Utah) will represent Team USA.

Gerard Qualifies For Medals Round
Red Gerard (Silverthorne, Colo.) earned a spot in the final round of men's snowboard slopestyle during qualifying runs Saturday at the Phoenix Sports Park.
Currently the FIS Snowboard World Cup leader, Gerard placed third among the 18 riders in the second qualifying heat Saturday, scoring 82.55 points. He trailed a pair of Canadians - Max Parrot, who led with an 87.36, and Mark McMorris, who posted an 86.83. American Kyle Mack (West Bloomfield, Mich.) finished 11th with a best score of 53.55 and did not qualify for the finals.
In the first qualifying heat, Chris Corning (Silverthorne, Colo.) and Ryan Stassel (Anchorage, Alaska) were unable to advance, finishing ninth and 17th respectively. The men's snowboard slopestyle finals begin at 10 a.m. KT Sunday/8 p.m. EST Saturday.

Bennett Sixth in Second Downhill Training
For the second-straight day, Bryce Bennett (Squaw Valley, Calif.) led Team USA in downhill training on the Jeongseon downhill track, finishing sixth, on a weather-shortened course.

“A little wind picked up today so they had to lower the start, and it changed the snow for the better - firmed it up,” Bennett said after starting from the super-G start in Friday’s training. “It’s definitely faster.”

Despite the lower start, Bennett was able to make some adjustments on the lower portion of the track in his search for speed.

“After the first training run I wanted to make some adjustments on the top of the course ... and some minor changes through the bottom,” Bennett said. “Out of Dragon Alley, you can jump a section, and it seems to be going faster, so I wanted to make that adjustment.”

The third and final training run on Saturday will offer the athletes one more opportunity to dial in their lines before Sunday’s race.

Ryan Cochran-Siegle (Starksboro, Vt.) was 24th Friday; Jared Goldberg (Holladay, Utah) 26th; Thomas Biesemeyer (Keene, N.Y.) 28th; Wiley Maple (Aspen, Colo.) 31st; and Ted Ligety (Park City, Utah), who will compete in the alpine combined event on February 13, was 33rd.

Schild, Kauf, McCargo, Qualify For Medal Round
Team USA qualified three of its four women’s moguls skiers into Sunday night’s medal round in the first of two qualifying rounds Friday at Phoenix Park.

Morgan Schild (Pittsford, N.Y.) qualified third with a score of 77.74, 1.98 behind the leader, Perrine Laffont of France. Jaelin Kauf (Alta, Wyo.) was fifth with a 77.45, while Keaton McCargo (Telluride, Colo.) posted a 75.67, good for eighth place.

The fourth American in the field, Tess Johnson, placed 22nd with a score of 65.55. The top 10 skiers from Friday advanced to the medal round. Johnson will have another chance to make the field of 20 during a second qualifier scheduled for Sunday at 7:30 p.m. KT/5:30 a.m. EST.

Murphy Qualifies For Medal Round
Troy Murphy (Bethel, Maine) finished fourth in the first men's freestyle skiing moguls qualification round Friday afternoon at the Phoenix Snow Park, securing a spot in Monday's medal round.

Murphy earned a score of 80.95 points, 5.12 behind the top score of 86.07, which went to Canada's Mikael Kingsbury.

Three other American skiers finished outside the top 10 and now look to earn a spot in the finals by way of Monday's second qualifying run, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. KT/5:30 a.m. EST. Casey Andringa (Boulder, Colo.) and Bradley Wilson (Butte, Mont.) each received a 75.25 to place 14th and 15th, respectively, while Emerson Smith (Dover, Vt.) was 22nd by virtue of the 72.59 he earned from the judges.

Women’s Skiathlon Kicks Off Olympics
The women’s 7.5k/7.5k skiathlon kicks off the Olympics as the first medal event. Athletes will ski 7.5k of classic technique, pull into the pits to change skis, then go another 7.5k using freestyle technique or skating. Team USA will start Rosie Brennan (Anchorage, Alaska), Jessie Diggins (Afton, Minn.), Caitlin Patterson (Anchorage, Alaska) and Kikkan Randall (Anchorage, Alaska). It will be the first Olympic start for Brennan and Patterson. Diggins was fifth in a 7.5k/7.5k skiathlon this past December in Lillehammer, Norway.

Team USA experienced its first taste of the Jeongseon downhill track in the first of three training runs Thursday. Racing under bright sunshine, and on a hard-fast, Colorado-snow-like track, Bryce Bennett (Squaw Valley, Calif.) led the way in seventh. “That was so much fun!” Bennett said after his run.

Mogul Athletes Ready To Rip
The first round of qualifications for moguls kicks off Friday morning at Phoenix Park, and the U.S. moguls team is primed to perform. “The team looked ready to rip in today’s final training session,” said head coach Matt Gnoza. “They each came out with a plan to polish up their runs before tomorrow’s qualifications and they executed those plans to perfection. The entire team is skiing well in all three phases of the game – turns, air and speed – and we’re psyched to get in the gate and get after it.”
Competition begins at 10 a.m. KST with women’s qualifications followed by men’s at 11:45 a.m. KST. The top 10 finishers from Friday’s qualification round will advance to finals. A secondary round of qualifications for women will take place on Sunday, Feb. 11, advancing another 10 skiers for a total of 20 in finals.

“It was a blast sharing our sport with Katie and the NBC staff,” Ida Sargent said. “I'm really impressed with how much she already knew about cross country skiing!”

SKI JUMPING
Full Team USA in Ski Jumping Finals
For the first time since 1998, Team USA qualified all four athletes into an Olympic ski jumping medal round. Kevin Bickner (Wauconda, Ill.) led the way in Thursday’s qualifying soaring 114.0 meters to finish 25th. He will be joined in Saturday night’s  competition by teammates Michael Glasder (Cary, Ill.), Will Rhoads (Park City, Utah) and junior Casey Larson (Barrington, Ill.).
“You can definitely see the progress our team is making,” said Bickner. “It’s cool to see all four of our guys make the medal event.”
The last time Team USA had four men in a medal round was the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, before the current qualifying process was in place. Saturday’s medal event will begin at 9:35 p.m. KST at the Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre.

Competition Opens Monday
Shaun White, Kelly Clark, and Chloe Kim highlighted the halfpipe snowboarding team’s opening press conference at the Alpensia Main Press Center Thursday morning. In the afternoon the eight pipe athletes had a chance to get into the halfpipe for the first time. Competition opens with women’s qualifying on Monday. The slopestyle athletes had their second-straight day of training getting ready for men’s finals on Monday and women on Tuesday.

Men's Downhill Training Starts Thursday

FREESTYLE
Moguls Qualifying Friday
Things are shaping up on the Phoenix Park Resort moguls course. The U.S. Olympic moguls team arrived in the athlete village over the weekend, participated in an opening press conference and got down to work with three productive nights of training. The team will have a morning training session on Thursday (Wednesday night in the USA) before the first rounds of qualification for men and women on Friday.
The top 10 athletes from Friday’s qualification rounds will advance to finals. 

CROSS COUNTRY
Team USA Opens Training at Alpensia
The first group of Team USA cross country athletes have hit the trails at the Alpensia Nordic Centre. It may be a golf course in the summertime, but this course layout is tough. Athletes hit the trails for the first time Tuesday and Wednesday. Most of Team USA’s 20 athletes are in Alpensia including Jessie Diggins (Afton, Minn.), Sadie Bjornsen (Anchorage, Alaska), Kikkan Randall (Anchorage, Alaska), Rosie Brennan (Anchorage, Alaska), Ida Sargent (Craftsbury, Vt.) and Erik Bjornsen (Anchorage, Alaska), who held a press conference Wednesday. Starters for Saturday's opening women’s skiathlon will be decided on Friday.

SKI JUMPING
Training Begins at Alpensia Nordic Centre
The view of the towering jumps at the Alpensia Nordic Centre illuminated at night is becoming the iconic look of the PyeongChang Olympics as ski jumping training began on Wednesday. Team USA skipped the morning sessions but was out on the HS106m hill Wednesday evening. Kevin Bickner (Wauconda, Ill.) led the team with two strong rounds including a 102.5m ride on his second jump. Bickner was joined by teammates Michael Glasder (Cary, Ill.), Casey Larson (Barrington, Ill.) and Will Rhoads (Park City, Utah) – all first-time Olympians.  
The women will get their first look at the jumps on Thursday with veteran Sarah Hendrickson (Park City, Utah) plus new Olympians Abby Ringquist (Park City, Utah) and Nita Englund (Florence, Wisc.). The men have a final training Thursday before the qualifying round where the top 40 finishers in a single jumping round will make the field for Saturday’s medal event. They will be joined by the top 10 in the world, who are pre-qualified.
It was a long day for Team USA with processing in Seoul and a long trip to Alpensia. “We are pretty satisfied with the first training for Team USA,” said team director Clint Jones. “ All four of our athletes made some improvements over the three jumps and are starting to get comfortable on the hill.”

SNOWBOARD
Big Features, Big Event
Team USA’s slopestyle athletes had a chance to ride the course Wednesday that includes some Olympic sized features. In Tuesday’s opening press conference, defending gold medalist Jamie Anderson’s eyes were big as she talked about the course. The team had an opportunity Tuesday for a quick course review and were hitting the jumps in Wednesday’s first full training session. The athletes will continue training daily leading up to Sunday’s opening medal event with women’s slopestyle snowboarding.  
The halfpipe snowboarding team including Shaun White (Carlsbad, Calif.), Kelly Clark Folsom, Calif.) and Chloe Kim (Torrance, Calif.) are in town and will open with a press conference Thursday before hitting the pipe at Phoenix Park. The first halfpipe event is set for Monday with women’s qualifying.
