Tough Day in St. Moritz

ST. MORITZ, Switzerland (Jan. 24, 2015) - Lara Gut of Switzerland took the home nation win in St. Moritz in an Audi FIS Ski World Cup downhill. It was a tough day for the USA with Laurenne Ross (Bend, OR) leading the way in 12th with a late-race mistake sending Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) tumbling into 23rd position in the final downhill before World Championships.
Early-running Edit Miklos of Hungary had taken an early lead before Gut set the standard running 16th. Only Anna Fenninger of Austria was able to come close, dropping Miklos down to third. Starting 22nd, Vonn was challenging for a podium through the midway mark, but got way low and lost valuable time trying to stay on course.
The race left World Championships selection open with no new results to impact next Wednesday's decision on who will go to Vail/Beaver Creek. Vonn, Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) and Stacey Cook (Mammoth Mountain, CA) already have achieved the top selection criteria category with their podium sweep in Lake Louise. That leaves one spot open for coaches to decide. The World Championships team will be announced late Wednesday afternoon.
The World Cup in St. Moritz wraps up with a super G Sunday then on to Vail/Beaver Creek.
