COURCHEVEL, France (Dec. 18) - Austrian Marlies Schild continued her slalom dominance Sunday by winning an Audi FIS Alpine World Cup in snowy Courchevel by a staggering 1.87 seconds over Finn Tanja Poutianen. Olympic downhill champion Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) went out in the first run, yet retained a 236 point lead in the early World Cup overall standings as defending overall winner Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany failed to finish the second run.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Reigning World Cup slalom champion Marlies Schild of Austria won the second slalom of the season
  • Lindsey Vonn retained a commanding 236 point lead in the overall standings despite going out in the first run
  • Julia Mancuso did not start due to a stomach bug and will miss the next race on a planned break
  • Sarah Schleper and Resi Steigler did not qualify for a second run and Mikaela Shiffrin also went out in the first run
  • Over three feet of snow forced the cancelation of the giant slalom and produced soft race conditions for the slalom
  • The women's tour now moves to Flachau, Austria for a night slalom on Tuesday Dec. 20

QUOTES
Lindsey Vonn
My coaches radioed up that they were putting water on the course because it was breaking up at the bottom. I just felt like I hit a wet patch of snow and my skies kind of slid, and it was too late to recover it.

It was the peely, slushy feeling you get. The top part of the course was absolutely perfect, considering everything, they did a great job.

I'm really happy with my run, I looked at the times and I was only eight-tenths out on the second split. It was definitely really positive. For (having) not (trained) in a week, it's not so bad. I'm trying to get my slalom back on form and so far it's going well.

Universal Sports will air the race at 11 a.m. ET on their 24-hour TV Network
