Blasting Wind Cancels Soldeu GS

SOLDEU-GRANDVALIRA, Andorra (Feb. 10) - Relentless high winds across the Pyrenees canceled the first of two Audi FIS Alpine World Cup giant slalom races scheduled in the small Andorran village of Soldeu. Overnight gusts hit 100 mph destroying banners and lifting finish tents into the Valira d'Orient river. The race was a make-up for the Dec. 17 giant slalom that was canceled after three feet of snow fell in Courchevel, France.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Blasting winds canceled the first of two World Cup giant slaloms scheduled for Soldeu
• The race was delayed two and a half hours before the jury cancelation
• It was a make-up for a giant slalom canceled on Dec. 17 in Courchevel, France
• Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) is third in the giant slalom standings, 73 points behind leader Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany
• Vonn currently leads the overall World Cup standings by 482 points
• It would have been the first World Cup staged in Andorra
• Saturday's forecast calls for more wind forcing jury to flip program, slalom now on Saturday with giant slalom Sunday
• Vonn, Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA), Resi Stiegler (Jackson Hole, WY and Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO) will start
