Baumgartner 7th in SBX

VEYSONNAZ, Switzerland (March 16) – Muscling through the tense heats, Nick Baumgartner (Iron River, MI) finished seventh in the Veysonnaz World Cup snowboardcross Saturday, securing the top finish for U.S. Snowboarding. The race left Baumgartner in fourth place in the World Cup snowboardcross standings, within reach of the top three as the team moves to finals in Sierra Nevada, Spain. Mateusz Ligocki from Poland won the men’s race and Nelly Moenne Loccoz from France won the women’s race.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Nick Baumgartner (Iron River, MI) finished seventh in the Veysonnaz World Cup snowboardcross Saturday, securing the top finish for U.S. Snowboarding.
• The race put him in fourth place in the World Cup snowboardcross standings, within reach of the top three.
• Baumgartner had to take two runs in order to qualify, but later led the small final with three other U.S. men on his tail.
• Jonathan Cheever (Saugus, MA) finished ninth, Seth Wescott (Sugarloaf, ME) 10th and rookie Alex Tuttle (Stratton, ME) 11th.
• Mateusz Ligocki from Poland won the men’s race.
• Callan Chythlook-Sifsof (Girdwood, AK) took the top finish for U.S. women at 12th, while Faye Gulini (Salt Lake City, UT) and Brooke Shaw (Litchfield, CT) finished 14th and 20th.
• Nelly Moenne Loccoz from France won the women’s race.
• The team heads to World Cup finals in Sierra Nevada, Spain for one last snowboardcross race on March 21.

It went pretty well for the most part. They all made it to a round of 12, we had Tuttle and Wescott and Baumgartner and Cheever on the other side of the ladder. They were all killing. Tuttle and Wescott's race early on, they were in the middle of the pack and the two guys on the side squished them and hung up on them. They just couldn't get back to third. Baumgartner and Cheever were tied for second in the last turn and it went wrong for them. I've got to study the video and learn why. We had four people in the small final and could have easily had four people in the big final. It was a bummer. They all rode great and sometimes it just doesn't go your way. I am encouraged by everyone's snowboarding today.
