2023-24 U.S. Para Snowboard Team Announced

PARK CITY, Utah (Oct. 12, 2023) - U.S. Ski & Snowboard officially announced the 10 athletes that have accepted their nomination to the 2023-24 U.S. Para Snowboard Team across all classifications and disciplines. 

The 2023-24 U.S. Para Snowboard Team is highlighted by two-time Paralympic gold medalist Brenna Huckaby and two-time Paralympic medalist Keith Gabel. Also headlining the team is recent ESPY Award winner Zach Miller, who took home three 2023 World Championship medals (one gold, one silver, one bronze) this March. 

The 2023-24 FIS Para Snowboard World Cup season begins in Landgraaf, Netherlands with two banked slalom races in November. From there, the team will spend time in Europe before heading to Canada to wrap up their season at the end of March. 

“It’s a really exciting time for the U.S. Para Snowboard Team,” said Erik Leirfallom, U.S. Ski & Snowboard Para Sport Director. “We have the most decorated Para snowboard team in the world. This will be a groundbreaking season in terms of results and building awareness of Para sports in the United States.”

In 2008, while competing in a snowcross race, Mike Schultz drifted off course, flying off his snowmobile and landing on his left leg. He sustained a severe compound fracture to his knee and, after multiple surgeries, had his leg amputated above the knee.

Joe Pleban from Fredericksburg, Virginia has made a mark in the Para Snowboarding world. He has achieved a silver in the 2022 World cup, along with a tenth and thirteenth place.

Minor was born missing his right forearm. He wore a prosthetic forearm and hand until he was five but stopped using it because it became a hindrance. Minor grew up skiing, wrestling, skateboarding, four-wheeling, and participating in mixed martial arts.

Zach was born with cerebral palsy and discovered snowboarding through the hospital sports program at the Children's Hospital in Denver. Daniel Gale recruited Zach to join his snowboard team at age 13 and helped him progress into an elite athlete.
Brenna Huckaby headshot image
Brenna Huckaby
Brenna was not always a snowboard world champion; she began her love of sports with gymnastics when she was young. However, an osteosarcoma diagnosis in 2010 resulted in the amputation of her right leg, leading her down a different path.
Keith Gabel headshot image
Keith Gabel
Gabel was introduced to snowboarding in 2000 and quickly developed a love for the sport. In June 2005, Gabel was involved in an industrial accident that crushed his left foot.

Noah Elliott is a 2x Paralympian (2018, 2022) and 2x Paralympic medalist (gold and bronze). Elliott learned about Para snowboarding through a camp he attended for children with cancer and was inspired by meeting his now teammate, Brenna Huckaby.
